She was a Samaritan, half Jewish and half Gentile. This foreshadows the fulfillment of the prophecy that Jesus would draw the Gentiles to himself. By proclaiming that no one who drinks the water He gives will ever thirst again, he is confirming that He is the Messiah and is ushering in a new covenant.
